Most innovations begin with a question and a desire to address a common issue in daily life. One of these problems has been around for thousands of years: air conditioning. Since the AC was invented, AC hasn’t been much of a problem, but many people wouldn’t have homes as comfortable as they are today if it weren’t for the AC. Let’s find out what Air Conditioning Appreciation Day is all about.
Air Conditioning Appreciation Day History
Before AC was invented, many ancient civilizations had advanced ways to stay cool in the summer. For example, the Persians used underground tunnels to get water for their crops. Hot air cooled the water, and as cold air escaped from the upper shafts, it cooled the basements and led up to the rooms where people lived. The Romans used the same design, which helped keep the stone walls and buildings cool so that people could be comfortable. Ice has been around forever, and the Roman emperors used it to cool down. The Han Dynasty in Ancient China used fans; centuries later, the early United States used fans and wet blankets to cool down. Once Tesla made oscillating fans, it made it possible for the AC to be made.
Then, in the United States, 1902 came along. Willis Haviland Carrier, who worked at a printing mill during industrialization, was interested in discovering how humidity might be managed there. He found that when air moved through coils filled with water, it got cooler as it went, which helped keep the ink lines and paper sizes the same. Even though he first designed it for his printing company, he decided to form the Carrier Air Conditioning Corporation of America due to the huge demand for his innovation. Today, ACs are almost a necessity in every home and car. This was especially true in the 1950s. So, Air Conditioning Appreciation Day is a time to remember how this great invention came and how far it has come.
